11th Annual Kids For Kindness Festival – Norman

Project Date: Sunday, April 18th, 12 noon – 6:00 p.m.

We have been invited to do an activity at the 11th Annual Kids For Kindness Festival in Norman on April 18th from 12noon – 6 pm. Last year we made wildflower seed balls and talked about backyard wildlife habitats. In the past we’ve also handed out small seedling trees. We can only do this if we have enough volunteers interested in helping out that day, probably for 2 hour shifts. If you would like to help, please email Kristy Wicker.

Great Backyard Bird Count

February 12-15, 2010
The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual four-day event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent and in Hawaii. Anyone can participate, from beginning bird watchers to experts. It takes as little as 15 minutes on one day, or you can count for as long as you like each day of the event. It’s free, fun, and easy—and it helps the birds. We’ll be adding updated GBBC materials for the next count as they become available.

Christmas Bird Count

The 110th Christmas Bird Count: Citizen Science in Action: From December 14 through January 5 tens of thousands of volunteers throughout the Americas take part in an adventure that has become a family tradition among generations. Families and students, birders and scientists, armed with binoculars, bird guides and checklists go out on an annual mission – often before dawn. For over one hundred years, the desire to both make a difference and to experience the beauty of nature has driven dedicated people to leave the comfort of a warm house during the Holiday season.
Each of the citizen scientists who annually braves snow, wind, or rain, to take part in the Christmas Bird Count makes an enormous contribution to conservation. Audubon and other organizations use data collected in this longest-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations – and to help guide conservation action.
From feeder-watchers and field observers to count compilers and regional editors, everyone who takes part in the Christmas Bird Count does it for love of birds and the excitement of friendly competition — and with the knowledge that their efforts are making a difference for science and bird conservation.
